Hot Flash 0 Golden Stars 6

Hello! I hope everyone's feeling hot and flashy!

Welcome back, Joanna! We had a great full lineup and a good showing of Hot Flashiness! Last night was fun -- at least, the playing was fun. I had my trash talking down to a science after practicing on the Thunderbirds last weekend. I warned one of their wings that I wouldn't see her, I'd be bothering their D instead. Our first shift, we came out like gangbusters...if gangbusters played hockey. And were awesome and spent lots of time in the opponents' zone and maybe even got a shot. On goal! Whoa. This was going to be a different game, thought I. This was going to be the glorious game when WE would get the lucky bounces, when the puck would go into THEIR net, when all our latent stickhandling prowess would rear its glorious head (if prowess had a head), thought I. And then the rest of the game happened.

The Stars were good - they skated around us with the puck, passed to their teammates, and hustled to all the pucks. We can do that too! We also hustled and got in their way, challenged for the puck, took it away, and generated chances. However, when we tried to block shots, but they mostly went between our legs and still headed toward the net (or was that just me? I made progress: in the second period, I got better! I tipped a puck going toward the net and it went wide instead! Wide...straight to a Golden Star, who then scored. You're welcome, Annemiek!) I again used the line that we needed to go to the other end, leave Alexis alone, and get some shots on Cathy because she looked bored. And I had a glorious opportunity when a stray puck cleared by their D ended up on my stick. Hoorah! I will shoot! I will score! I will shoot! I will...bounce it off the D's leg and it will go out of the zone. Or straight to another of their players. Seriously, how many unlucky bounces could we have in a game!? Every time it went off their skate, it went to one of their players who'd catch it in stride and be off. Every time it went off our skates, it went to one of their players who'd catch it in stride and be off. Sad. Case in point: we had something going in their zone when I hit the puck off of Julie's skate and it got stuck there and went out of the zone and off they went again. Kim had a great backdoor goal, which was a good reminder to mark up opposing players in front of the net. We get tied up in front of opposing goalies...tied up so much that to get my stick free, I bopped Kirsten on the head with my stick. Whatever, she totally deserved it ;-)

But fear not, Hot Flash! We're awesome and most of their 6 goals were flukes, knocked in by crazy deflections off our own skates or players. Again, we skated just fine! If we keep our legs moving and challenge the pucks, we'll get them! We have a game on Saturday, and we KNOW we can win! We've done it before, we'll do it again, go, fight, WIN! (Hmm, maybe playing in my high school rink has brought back some school spirit)

Here's some more, inspired by the Positive Mental Attitudes we'll all bring to the rink Saturday:
PMA! (PMA!)
Ooh I feel so good today! (Ooh I feel so good today!)
Happy Happy Happy! (happy happy happy!)
Hey that's ok, that's ok, that's ok - yeah. (hey, that's ok, that's ok, that's ok yeah!)

Happy Wednesday :-)

Hot Flash 1 Brooklyn Bombers 5

Hello, Mighty Hot Flash!

We got a great boost of energy this Wednesday, as Luscious rejoined the ranks of the playing!  Yay!  Unfortunately, some of our sickies were still sick, but we still had 5 D and 7 forwards and Pam back in goal.  Woot!

We were up against our old friends the Bombers, but familiarity didn't help us so much this time. There was a little miscommunication, a little "where did the puck go," a little "ooh, Katie has a breakaway! ooh, she shot it wide...again.  Ooh, they got the puck...now they have a breakaway...oooh, crap."  Dawn had some great stick work to get the puck out of our zone, Cheryl had a nice run up the ice, Amy was tough to get through down low, and Joanna was always ready to zoom up the ice up top.  Beth had some sweet moves of her own, and Sue ripped a great shot from the point. Mona had a couple great stuffs of some quick-skating Bombers, and Kathy had a solid game, except for the part where her stick broke. Way to battle adversity, Kathy!  Lavonne always seems to get the short end of things when the refs turn a blind eye to penalties and got taken out at least twice, but kept on chuggin'. Julie was great in the middle and had some good chances, Mary got thrown right into a tough game but held her own , Pam had some stellar saves, and a couple stellar flying-through-the-air-with-the-greatest-of-ease moments.  YAY Pam!!!  Glad you bounce!  I got lucky with a shot that deflected off a defender's stick for a beautiful roof shot over the goalie's head.  Yay Christmas socks!  Per Rick's suggestion, they will remain in my hockey bag, unwashed, and I'll wear them every game until I don't score.  Muah ha ha!  That should leave me wide-open on the ice :-)

Hope everyone had as much fun as I did (except for the part where I got elbowed in the noggin'.  Ow.)  See you Friday for practice!

Hot Flash 1 Cardinal 7

Hello Hot Flashers!

We had a fun game last night at the Snoopy Rink in St Paul as we took on the Cardinal. Last time we played them, the final score was 9-0, so our goals (no pun intended) were to cut down their score and increase our own.  Goal met!

We had a short bench with only 11 of us able to play. What a change from Friday, but the locker room mood was full of excitement to get out there and have some fun! I think we surprised and frustrated the Cardinal from the outset as they didn't score at all for awhile and we had our own good chances! Eventually, they broke through and scored 2, but we weren't at all concerned. Joanna was even less concerned as she picked up the puck in the neutral zone, and with two defenders on her, shot on goal and got her own rebound and scored! It was 2-1 and we were feeling pretty good. Ahhh, hockey!

Pam had a bunch of awesome saves and froze the puck when we needed a change and a breather. Yay, Pam!! Cheryl had a couple good runs up the ice, and we had a stellar penalty kill that gave up no goals and actually created a couple good chances for us shorthanded! Their goalie was much busier than last time and a few members of their team mentioned how we'd improved since last time. Everyone felt good about our performance, short bench and all, and we're looking forward to Wednesday's game at the SuperRink!

See you all then, Flashers!
